Peer support

What to expect when attending a peer support group

Why peer support helps

Finding communities who understand living grief and who truly ‘get it’ is a powerful way to stay connected to people when it matters most to you. No matter where you are on your journey, you are welcome to attend a group at any time.

Peer support groups are a safe space, with non-judgemental support from other carers. They offer empathy, understanding, and the sharing of experiences, which can all be learned from. A collective mix of stages and stories, with practical ‘hints and tips’ can prove extremely helpful, particularly from those who are further on in their journey.

Peer support groups may feel like a coping mechanism. It’s impossible to have all the answers when you’re at the centre of caring for someone and therefore these groups can offer a mix of lived experienced to learn from. They can also provide an opportunity for new connections and friendships.

While you can talk about anything with other peers, you can also get professional help from Carers of West Lothian, including terminology breakdown and understanding. Try to be open minded; peer support groups offer so much and are truly beneficial.
